Minnesota Power issues response plan to wildfires

Minnesota Power says they are taking measures to protect public safety, as wildfire containment efforts continue.

The company says they are working closely with community officials, emergency management, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, and the Eastern Area Complex Incident Management Team. If evacuation orders are issued for Hoyt Lakes and the surrounding areas, Minnesota Power may shut off electric services to the impacted areas.

Minnesota Power says a proactive emergency shutoff may be necessary as energized power lines can hinder firefighting efforts and endanger public safety.

If power is shut off, restoration can take multiple days while crews assess remaining wildfire risks and potential damage to equipment.

The company says they will update customers as the situation evolves via mobile outage app and Minnesota Power’s website.

For residents in the “ready” or “set” evacuation zones, here are some tips to prepare for possible power outages:

  • Keep your freezers and refrigerators closed.
  • Disconnect your appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
  • Use alternate methods to keep medications cool, or to supply power-dependent medical devices.

Minnesota Power does have more resources and information about emergency power shutoffs listed on their website.
