Lake Superior Zoo back open after water main break

The Lake Superior Zoo is back open after a water main break. With subzero temps overnight Wednesday, two pipes broke. Water flooded through the ceiling to the zoo’s main office, lower level, and storage area. The zoo is thankful no animals or staff were harmed in the incident.

The zoo team worked alongside its partners from the City of Duluth to “triage the damage quickly and get moving with a contractor to help with further clean up and restoration efforts.”

Visitors will notice a modified pathway through the zoo amid partial building closures. Some animals are temporarily relocated. Large fans and dehumidifiers are running to dry things out, which some guests may find loud.

Executive Director Hailey Hedstrom said Friday in a news release:

“Thanks to the hard work of our staff, city partners, and contractors, we are able to reopen to the public today with $5 tickets (through 1/31)!

“As a nonprofit organization, we rely on tickets and donations to help us care for our animals and accomplish our mission. Your support during this means the world to us – every little bit can make a big difference!

“As always, I am proud of our staff and their dedication to our mission and animals. We are grateful to have support from the City of Duluth, our contractor, and of course community members just like you!

“Thank you for continuing to support the Lake Superior Zoo.”
