Lake Superior Ice Festival is back
A family-friendly event full of winter entertainment has returned. The Lake Superior Ice Festival will be at Barker’s Island from five to eight pm on Friday and Saturday.
“Superior is a winter city. We don’t stop playing outside just because it gets cold. The Lake Superior Ice Festival celebrates our very best season,” said Superior Mayor Jim Paine. “I’m impressed by the turnout each year, but not surprised, because the festival gets a little better each January. Dress warm and join us at the Lake.”
Festivities kick off on Friday with Mayor Paine’s sled ride down the Superior Snow Slide followed by the fourth annual “Guns and Hoses Kubb Tournament” where the Police and Fire Departments compete in the beach area. The beach area will also have fire pits and an ice carousel. There will also be a Polar Ice Sculpture Trolley Tour and Dinner leaving from Barker’s Island Inn at 5:30 pm.
“The City has partnered with many community businesses and organizations to bring you this year’s Ice Festival,” said Jodi Saylor, Volunteer, Events, and Program Coordinator. “There’s something for everyone, so come hungry, dress warm, and get ready for a weekend of fun!”
The festival park area will have disc golf, corn hole, mini golf, and 12 different food and beverage vendors. There will also be opportunities to meet ice princesses and characters at Fairlawn Mansion and Barker’s Island. Other activities include ice bowling, Blizzy’s Mascot Dande-Off, and “Snowga” (yoga in the snow).
Midwest Ice Racing will return with “Friday Night Under the Lights” and ice races on Saturday.
” Fast speed, crashes, just family entertainment, and a nice cold snowy night and day,” said Midwest Ice Racing Promoter Dalton Mains. “The last two years, the ice out here was not deemed safe enough and thick enough for us to be out here parking 200 trucks and trailers on the ice. People will call you crazy to start with, but we’ve got to have it safe. No ice is never considered safe, but we call it somewhat safe.”
The Lake Superior Ice Festival will end with a fireworks show at 6:30 pm on Saturday. The full event schedule can be found at this link.
