GND Rec center kicks off summer with first-ever skate jam

Skaters of all ages and abilities showed up to Gary New Duluth on June 7 to help break in the newly constructed skate park with its first ever event.

While the park originally opened in the fall of 2024, the GND Skate Jam, the park’s first event, featured live music, a food truck, and prize giveaways.

“We just wanted to bring the whole skate community together to get out and enjoy the new park.” said Wyatt Lindberg, a skater and chair member with the GND Rec center.

The event welcomed skaters of all kinds, regardless of age and ability – a welcome sight for participants.

“if you look out there, it’s everybody,” said skater K.C. Myers, “The little kids are looking up to the bigger ones. And also the rippers who’ve been riding have brought their children as well. think skateboarding has taught the world that we’re all family.”
