Discussions about potential move of U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Museum

Discussions about Hockey Hall of Fame Museum

The proposal to move the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Museum out of Eveleth is facing some pushback.

The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Museum in Eveleth celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023. Now, the future could mean a move to St. Paul.

Discussions by the Board of Directors have included a potential collaboration with the Minnesota Wild, as they work on a revitalization project in St. Paul.

Karin Housley, chairperson of the museum board, said they’ve been talking about this for about a year now, with the city of Eveleth, St. Paul, and the Wild.

“To have the opportunity to share hockey history with an even greater audience is something that needs to be looked at. But what can we do in exchange for the 9000 visitors that visit the Hall every year, and what can have an economic impact for the city of Eveleth. We absolutely do not want to steal anything from the city of Eveleth,” Housley said.

There are those who oppose the move, including Senator Grant Hauschild. “The late, great Senator David Tomassoni advocated strongly for this during his time. And as Iron Range legislators, we are going to defend this, if there are efforts to take it away,” Hauschild said.

He plans on introducing a resolution in the Minnesota Senate, opposing the move.

Dante Tomassoni, one of the lawmaker’s sons, said in a statement: “The location of the hall in this storied hockey town of Eveleth is every bit as important to the history as the memorabilia in it. The two are intertwined.”

He added that generally the museum is going to be updated, which will upgrade the user experience.
