Consulting group to audit the Superior Police Department

The Superior City Council unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday to hire a consultant to audit the Superior Police Department.

Councilor Nicholas Ledin says the Police Department came to the Public Safety Commission with a request to hire a consultant who would “look into the police department and city policies, collect evidence, conduct interviews, and make recommendations.”

“There has been some internal issues,” Councilor Ledin explained.

The city has decided to go with OIR Group, which has worked with police departments in Chicago, Iowa City, Madison, and more.

In a letter sent to council in April, Mayor Jim Paine said, “While a final direction or outcome of such an exercise is difficult to predict, it is my hope the OIR will bring leadership any identified areas of concern and suggestions for change in policy or culture that might enhance the achievement of our department’s mission.”

Payne said he did not expect the cost of OIR’s services to exceed $50,000.
