13-year-old charged after allegedly shooting at Douglas County deputies

Carsen Peterson, age 13, is being charged as an adult after allegedly shooting a gun at Douglas County deputies at approximately 4:35pm on Tuesday May 6th in the Town of Superior.

Carsen appeared in court Wednesday, May 7, and now faces five felony charges including one count of 1st-Degree Intentional Homicide and two counts of 1st-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety .

This stems from an incident that happened on State Trunk Highway 35 in the Town of Superior.

Authorities responded to reports of a teenager throwing and breaking things. The responding deputy spoke with the Peterson who then went into the house before remerging with a firearm.

Shots were fired at authorities over the course of an hour, before the suspect was taken into custody.

“I’ll say that the responding deputies did a fantastic job of de-escalating the situation,” said Douglas County Sheriff Matt Izzard. “Their decision making, in the face of danger, led to the peaceful resolution. I’m proud of the professionalism our deputies display everyday and last night was a great example of how we serve the community.”

A preliminary hearing for Peterson is set for May 14.
