Real Ranger: Getting creative with Grandma Nancy

A retired teacher, Nancy Mike-Johnson loves kids. And she’s sharing that love through Artastic, an art program through the Grand Rapids Area Library.

It used to be in person, but now it’s virtual. And it’s reaching even more young people this way.

"We put together kits of art supplies, and those will go out to people," explained Tracy Kampa, the Children’s Librarian. "Grandma Nancy comes in once a month and films Artastic, and the video goes onto our Facebook page and now our YouTube page."

Grandma Nancy said it’s rewarding for her, to connect with the little learners. "For families, it’s a fantastic way for them to do something creative with their kids."

She received a handmade quilt from Kampa, who loves to quilt. It features crayons in a variety of colors.

"She completely volunteers her time, and I wanted to say thank you in a meaningful way," Kampa said.

It definitely was a surprise for Grandma Nancy. "I did not expect a quilt. It’s pretty great. And it’s very personal, everything in it is very personal," she said.

There’s also an Online Storytime that kids and families can access.
