Superior Council OK’s road rebuild
On the evening of May 20, the Superior City Council held their second bi-monthly meeting.
During the nearly three hour long session, officials heard a briefing on Nemadji golf course, by its General Manager and Golf Professional Dan Walker, who detailed updates at the course, including a new logo, some repairs and changes to concessions. He also took time to highlight that the course does turn a profit, saying this is uncommon for public courses.
The council then moved on to to Mayor Jim Paine’s appointments and reappointments to committees, boards and commissions – some 45 in total. This sparked debates over language and policy regarding appointments, which the Mayor and councilors informally agreed should be looked at further for clarity. The council did approve all of the Mayor’s appointees.
Then, councilors debated a contract over regarding a reconstruction project for East 5th Street, stretching from 24th Avenue East to 31st Avenue East. Debate stemmed largely around whether or not the company that won the bidding process conformed to a city ordinance requiring the hiring of “responsible contractors.” This was added to by public comment both from legal counsel for the construction company as well as union officials, as well as official comments from the city’s attorney regarding the bid process. In the end the council did vote to approve the construction contract.
