The historic Lighthouse bed and breakfast gets ready to open
The Lighthouse bed and breakfast in Two Harbors held an open house on Friday April 18th ahead of their May opening.
The Lake County historical society is in the midst of a $40,000 fundraising campaign to restore the property. A boiler failure caused major damage there and the 3M museum during the January and February cold snap.
They’re about 20% of the way there to their fundraising goal, which meant they were able to fix up the keeper’s quarters. This local group was so glad to see this history stay alive.
“It’s very important to preserve historic buildings because they stand as testaments of time,” said Ellen Lynch the Executive Director of the Lake County Historical Society. “The Agate Bay Lighthouse has been guiding ships since 1892, and it’s really neat to be able to see and feel the history. It’s been great to live here in Two Harbors and these historic pieces all along the shore really bring a part of that community out.”
The bed and breakfast will open in May and hopes to give the community a better look into history.
“I think it’s really important to have a historic building like this open to the public and usable in the way that it is,” said Joe VanErt from Two Harbors. “I mean, a lot of historic places are chained up and you can see them from outside, but this place you can come and stay at, which is really unique. It gives you a chance to have a taste of that historical experience. What was it really like to spend a night in this lighthouse with the waves crashing on the shore, what was that feeling?”
