Adaptive Ski Day at Spirit Mountain
With fresh powder on the slopes, it was the perfect day for Gillette Children’s and Northland Adaptive Recreation’s Adaptive Ski Day at Spirit Mountain.
Using special equipment like sit-skis, kids were able to ride down the slopes with the help of instructors from Northland Adaptive Recreation.
Gillette Children’s helps patients with brain, bone, and movement conditions, and events like this give those kids the chance to enjoy athletics in ways they might not otherwise be able to.
“It fills my cup to be able to help out people that usually don’t get the opportunity to or those who would feel limited, like they couldn’t get out and get skiing. Today is really just a heartfelt day where you actually get to put into practice all of the things that you want for people with limitations to be able to do,” said NAR site coordinator Emma Bursinger.
Not only is it great for the kids to get out and experience the thrills of skiing, but the parents also get to sit back and see their children have a blast.
Alexa Deitchler, the mother of one of the participants, said “it allows my daughter to feel like just any other 9, almost 10 year old. All I said was she wants to go as fast as she can, and they said okay!”
Northland Adaptive Recreation’s next event is “Shoot For Fun” in September.
