Todd Phillips’ much-debated supervillain origin story and R-rated box-office smash “Joker” topped all films with 11 Academy Awards nominations on Monday, while Martin Scorsese’s elegiac crime epic “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino’s 1960s Los Angeles fairy tale “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood” and Sam Mendes’ World War I tale “1917” all trailed close behind with 10 nods apiece.

The nominations will bring about endless speculation about who will win, and who should win. Who wins will be revealed on Feb. 9, when the Oscars are held in Los Angeles. They'll need all the star power they can get - the show will go hostless for its second straight year.

Monday's Oscar nominations were full of historic achievements and trivial tidbits. Antonio Banderas has received his first Academy Award nomination for the first time. John Williams was nominated for the 52nd time.  In addition to Banderas' best actor nod for “Pain and Glory” and Williams' best original score nomination for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” Scarlett Johansson became the 12th double acting nominee in Oscar history. She's up for best supporting actress for “Jojo Rabbit” and best actress for “Marriage Story.” She's one of a record 62 women nominated for Oscars this year, but the best director category was, as it almost always is, all men.

Beyoncé’s song “Spirit” from “The Lion King” didn’t roar loud enough to earn her a nomination for best original song, though Randy Newman, Elton John and the husband-wife duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez have a chance at winning another Oscar for songwriting.

Rounding out the five nominees for best original song are Diane Warren, earning her 11th bid with no wins, and Cynthia Erivo, who also picked up a nomination for best actress for “Harriet.”
