When a man inherits a small town bar, its dark secret comes with it. That's the plot of an upcoming horror film, "The Hand That Feeds."

The movie will be shot in Duluth, in large part thanks to St. Louis County's new film incentives

"There's a lot of talent in both the Twin Cities and the Duluth area," Director and Executive Producer Blair Smith said. "But a lot of people, investors, are scared to come and shoot movies there because there's not a whole lot of incentive."

"If you need outdoor shots and it's between Minnesota and Canada, and Canada offers you more money back on the tail end of your production, you're probably going to want to go with the one that's going to pat you on the back a little harder at the end," Kat LaFleur with LZ Productions said.

But now, money spent on productions in St. Louis County will be eligible for a 25% rebate.

"We're putting money back in the arts pockets, but we're also helping boost the economy in Duluth by renting out the lodging there, handling all the catering there, renting all the gear from there, hiring local talent," Smith said. "We'll be looking for local extras to come down and play some roles."

Much of it will be shot at The Caddy Shack in Lincoln Park, some in the bar and some in open space above it. Filming starts May 1.

LZ Productions, the Minnesota company behind the film, has featured Northland locations in movies before. But this one will be fully Minnesotan.

"It's really fun to be able to showcase that we are able to compete on that level. We are able to do these really cool feature films when there's the push for it," LaFleur said.

They hope to wrap up filming by May 23 and release the movie in October.

If interns, actors or extras are needed, that will be announced on the LZ Productions Facebook page.
