United Steelworkers Local 9460 held an informational picket outside of the Duluth Airshow Saturday to bring attention to their current contract negotiations with Essentia Health.
They say they didn't want to disrupt the air show, but held their picket near their since Essentia was one of the events sponsors.
Deanna Hughes, president of United Steelworkers Local 9460, said that the contract negotiations have been difficult and that she doesn’t feel Essentia is treating workers well.
“They just have only offered us subpar wages,” said Hughes, “They're trying to change our working conditions. They’re not really giving any sort of equitable thank you to these employees, especially all of who worked during a pandemic. I mean it’s crazy.”
Essentia released a statement in response to the picket that read, “Informational picket activity is not unusual during bargaining. Essentia Health greatly values our employees and all their good work on behalf of our mission of making a healthy difference in people’s lives. We’re focusing our efforts at the bargaining table because that’s where solutions are found."
