The Duluth Fire Department offered some safety advice ahead of the busiest cooking day of the year; Thanksgiving.
The Deputy Chief of Life Safety for the Duluth Fire Department, Jon Otis, says it's best to make a plan and to keep things organized.
“The biggest problem is people overcooking things,” said Otis. “[They] either have something too high in there oven, their temperature is too high, or they have too many things in oven and they forget the time limit of what they are trying to do.”
Deputy Chief Otis said if a fire does start its best to have a phone close at hand to call 9-1-1 and a sturdy lid handy to cover up and put out the fire.
He also said if it’s a grease fire, don't put water on it.
Otis went on to say that fires often spread when people see a fire in their oven and panic and open it up.
If there's a fire in your oven, he said, to turn off the fuel source and keep the door shut. That keeps it so the fire can’t be fueled by heat or oxygen.
