One bank opening a branch in Duluth has also renovated one of the city's historic buildings.

Bell Bank began renovating the Historic Temple Opera Building on East Superior Street in April last year.

The Fargo based bank leased the historic Hart District building saying they wanted to help preserve part as much of its design as possible.

Part of that included preserving the building’s brown stone design, and its keyhole window design.

“It was important that we gave a nod of respect to the history of the building,” said Bell Bank of Duluth President Tim McShane. “So the keyholes were original to the building built back in 1889. And so we retained the keyhole look, obviously upgrading the windows themselves for modern efficiencies, but we did retain that look because of its important nod to its history.”

And Bell bank also celebrates its own history. The bank’s hearth includes field stones taken from a founding member's farm in North Dakota.
