One of Duluth’s judicial leaders serving in the Sixth District Court was honored Wednesday.

Judge Shaun Floerke received the 2020 Gary P. Olson Visionary Award, presented by the Center for Alcohol & Dug Treatment (CADT) for his exceptional work presiding over the St. Louis County DWI Court.

He was recognized for his compassionate work on the court and in the community working with people struggling with drug and alcohol abuse. Floerke thanked others who have helped make the treatment courts what they are today.

“Margaret Mead said never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has,” quoted Judge Shaun Floerke. “I've been blessed with little groups of thoughtful committed people who will kind of pick up all the crazy ideas I throw around and kind of make something work out of it.”

The award is named after the former leader of the CADT. Gary Olson says Floerke's compassion helps so many members of the community.

“That seems to be exactly where Judge Floerke comes from, and understands that love and compassion are really the keys in establishing relationships with people that can really help support them in making themselves, their families and communities better,” said Gary Olson.
