Duluth Firefighters Local 101 is offering four new scholarships with the goal of increasing diversity within the department.

The scholarships will pay for all required fire training at Lake Superior College to become a Duluth firefighter. That includes: State Certification Firefighter I and II, Hazmat Operations, and CPAT examination certifications.

Duluth Firefighter Katie Sandstrom says the goal is to open up firefighting opportunities for people of all different backgrounds.

She says that will go a long ways in helping firefighters connect with everyone in the community.

"It's very important that we have different people and diversity, and that we are able to communicate with those who we are serving, and that we're able to understand them," said Sandstrom. "We're all able to offer something different, and we're able to help and understand the community that we're serving when we are more well-rounded and diverse," she said.

The scholarships are now available to apply for. Click here for more info.
