A resolution, against indigenous boarding school policies and atrocities, passed in the Duluth City Council Monday evening.
The resolution was passed unanimously by the eight councilors in attendance. It calls on the United States Congress to commission a study and subsequent report on the boarding school policy.
The resolution also supports efforts of reconciliation in addressing the impacts of historical trauma, language and cultural loss, and genocide.
Before the vote Monday night, a group gathered outside the Duluth City Hall building in support. WDIO spoke with Council President Renee Van Nett about what she hoped would come of the resolution.
"Recognition and having folks educate, learn something," shared Van Nett."And then become allies or friends and kind of do that work."
