Four million masks are being distributed to Chambers of Commerce across the state, including here in the Northland. The Duluth Chamber of Commerce set out to distribute 50,000 masks at the DECC Friday.

This was part of statewide effort by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development to make masks more readily accessible to businesses, organizations and non-profits, following the state’s mask mandate.

The YMCA, Goodwill and Bluestone Apartments were three of many local hubs to take advantage of the mask distribution Friday.

Collin Rainey, assistant property manager and concierge at Bluestone Apartments said the distribution would allow their facility to provide masks to residents who may not otherwise have access to masks, as well as, residents who may need an extra mask.

“This is a huge help and its great of the city to put this on,” Rainey said.

Bonnie Lou Dunphy, a volunteer at the Star of the North Maternity Home said the mask distribution would allow their non-profit to provide masks to staff, residents and guests.

“We have a lot of volunteers and staff that come through and so we'll wear the masks just to keep up with the state and city mandate,” Dunphy said. “The women also go out of the house for appointments and grocery shopping so we will need masks for that as well.”

Chris Johnson, Director of Marketing and Communications at the Duluth Chamber of Commerce said Friday’s distribution was made possible by volunteers and ambassadors from the chamber, who were happy to help out.

“We're really excited about the opportunity to distribute masks today. The cause for it is to really augment businesses with a quick influx of masks,” Johnson said.

According to Johnson, the Northland area received over 130,000 masks to distribute.

Another mask distribution will be held by the Hermantown Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, August 5th from 12:00-4:00pm in the City of Hermantown Administration parking lot. That distribution will be for businesses only.
