When COVID-19 struck, graphic designer Teri Glembin used the quarantine to get creative!

With new markers in hand, she began to doodle. And before long, she found herself drawing and decorating a traditional Swedish horse.

"I started this at the end of March, and just started doodling something with a friend of mine," says Glembin. "We kind of made a deal that everyday we would do some art because it made us happy." She says it was the perfect way to keep herself close to her friend, when connections mean so much during this pandemic.

Using bright and bold colors, she put a modern and intricate twist on a piece of her heritage.

"I would take a picture of it when I was done at the end of each day and send it to my friend. It was, "this is dilly, daddle, doodle..." whatever- and pretty soon I'm doing a dala a day! Like the third one, I'm like, I can do this everyday."

Fast forward to a new year, and her daily dala drawings are now on exhibit in the Nordic Center in Duluth. In-person viewing is by appointment only, but there is a virtual gallery tour available any time of the day.

To help bring some extra cheer to the new year, and to highlight the work that Glembin is doing with the dalas, the Nordic Center is hosting a couple virtual workshops for all ages. There will be some storytelling, crafts, coloring books, and even a history lesson about the origin of the little carved horses.

Anyone interested in tapping into their creative side can visit the Nordic Center's website and register for the classes.
