According to a letter sent to the Carlton County Board of Commissioners, the Department of Corrections believes there are deficiencies in plumbing, lack of natural light, heating, security electronics, cooling and overall poor construction.

The DNT reports that the letter went on to say that the average lifespan of a facility that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week is usually 25-30 years. Consequently, the Department of Corrections praised the county for maintaining it as well as they have for 40 years.

The Carlton County Board of Commissioners has had several discussions about the potential of a new faciltiy. According to the DNT, they are unsure if or where this would be.

Residentsare encouraged to contact the board of commissioners and county leadership with questions, comments or feedback.
