The first medical cannabis dispensary in the Duluth area is slated to open in Hermantown by November.
Vireo Health of Minnesota, formerly known as Minnesota Medical Solutions, is one of two companies authorized to dispense medical cannabis in the state. Its Hermantown location will do business as Green Goods, a name which is also being adopted by the company's four existing retail locations in Minneapolis, Bloomington, Rochester, and Moorhead.
The exact location of the new Hermantown location was not disclosed in Wednesday's announcement.
Currently, the closest cannabis dispensary to Duluth is a Leafline Labs location in Hibbing.
Kyle Kingsley, MD, the CEO and founder of Vireo Health, said their existing Twin Cities-area dispensaries have already been receiving patients from Duluth.
"I know Duluth well, I did undergrad there, very excited to bring this Green Goods concept and dispensary to Hermantown. [I] anticipate it will be well-received by the city of Duluth and the surrounding area," Kingsley said.
Patients must have approval from physicians to buy goods at the dispensaries. Kingsley said they are working with physicians to get patients certified.
Besides Hermantown, the company is also opening new locations in Blaine, Burnsville, and Woodbury.
