A new face is entering the race for Duluth City Council. Azrin Awal is running for Duluth City Council At Large.

Awal says her family immigrated from Bangladesh.

She says she helped fund the NAACP at UMD, and is a current NAACP board member.

She adds she wants to join the Duluth City Council because she wants to honor the commitment to service that her family and ancestors instilled in her.

"I want to bring my voice to the city council, so that I can help raise and empower other voices, who are often unheard in Duluth, who often are struggling," said Awal.

The contested races for Duluth City Council will be decided in November.
