The Duluth School District says Denfeld High School was in lockdown for about 40 minutes on Wednesday afternoon due to a physical alternation between several students, and that two students were involved in another altercation later.

The district says there were no serious injuries and no weapons were involved in either incident.

The first incident happened at about 2:45 p.m. In a news release, the district said school staff "immediately responded and worked to de-escalate the situation and the police were called as a precautionary measure to assist with student safety during dismissal."

Teaching continued with students in classrooms during the lockdown, which concluded at the end of the school day at 3:24.

The district says the second altercation happened as buses were loading, and that the altercation was stopped by school staff and police officers.

"Denfeld High School will not tolerate any behavior that puts the school, students or staff at risk. There are severe consequences for those who behave this way and the school will follow disciplinary procedures as outlined in the Family & Student Handbook," the district's news release said.

The district encouraged students to reach out to their school counselor or social worker if they need support at school.

The district said police will investigate to determine whether there are any charges to be filed. Police had not commented on the incidents as of late afternoon.
