Things are going to be getting busier at UMD in the coming weeks, with return of staff and faculty, and then of course the students.
Operations and maintenance folks are busy preparing, as the pandemic continues to be a problem.
Much of the work has to do with ventilation. They're installing high efficiency filters in the HVAC systems across campus.
"It enhances the filtration of the air," explained Chris Stevens, UMD's operations manager. "We want to make sure we have good air exchange in our classrooms and public spaces."
They just got two semis full of the high efficiency filters. Before COVID, those were reserved for laboratory settings.
"We treat all the air coming into the buildings, and we are trying to use more fresh air than before," John Sawyer said. He's the mechanical operations manager at UMD.
Sawyer said that they decided to buy portable air purifiers, to help boost the quality of the air in areas where the flow isn't as good as it could be. There are about 50 that will be wheeled into classrooms in the coming weeks.
Also, expect to see all of the hand sanitizer stations and disinfecting supplies placed around campus again. "We want to have the resources available for students and faculty and staff, so they feel comfortable," Stevens added.
It's all about removing the barriers to learning. "Any new school year is exciting. But it's extra special for us
