The Mall of America in Bloomington announced Tuesday that it will close until at least the end of the month due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The closure will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday.  In a letter to guests, the mall said it must act responsibly and do its part to slow the spread of COVID-19.

"We respect Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’ leadership and decision to further enhance community mitigation to stop people from gathering and potentially spreading the disease. Complying with Governor Walz's order is the right thing to do for the state, for our tenants, guests, and our team members," the mall said.

Walz's executive order does not specifically mention malls, but it does include restaurants, food courts, and performance venues.

The closure will continue until at least March 31, but the mall has not given an exact reopening date.
