The top infectious disease expert in the U.S. issued a warning to young people as cases of the coronavirus continue to climb, especially in the Sunbelt, with many of the new infections occuring in younger Americans.

"I think what we're missing in this is something that we've never faced before; is that a risk for you is not just isolated to you," Dr. Anthony Fauci said.

"So, if you get infected, you will infect someone else who clearly will infect someone else. We know that happens because the reproduction element of the virus is not less than one," he said.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has shut down bars in Texas and scaled back restaurant dining, the most dramatic reversals yet as confirmed coronavirus cases surge.

In addition, Florida has banned alcohol consumption at its bars after its daily confirmed coronavirus cases neared 9,000, almost double the previous record set just two days ago.

"You have an individual responsibility to yourself, but you have a societal responsibility, because if we want to end this outbreak, really end it, and then hopefully when a vaccine comes and puts the nail in the coffin, we've got to realize that we are part of the process," Fauci said.
