Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan held a press call to highlight the COVID-19 Housing Assistance Program (CHAPs) and to remind Minnesotans to apply before the deadline of Monday, December 7, 2020, at 11:59pm.

CHAPs provides aid to those who are behind on their rent, mortgage, utilities, or any other payments that would jeopardize people from having a place to live.

Courtney Gallo, a utility operations paralegal, said people need to be mindful that payments that have been frozen during the pandemic won’t be frozen forever, so those who’ve let the bills pile up should also look into assistance before everything is due.

Minnesotans seeking housing assistance should call 211 or apply at by the deadline.

“The importance of stable housing has never been clearer than during this pandemic,” said Governor Walz. “As Minnesotans struggle to make ends meet, we are taking action to help people keep their homes and to provide options for people without a home. We know more is needed, and that’s why we will be working to get additional funds in the upcoming special session.”

Jennifer Ho, the Minnesota Housing Commissioner, stressed that there is still plenty of CHAPs funds available to be drawn from, so “getting help is a win-win for everyone.”

Additionally, Minnesota’s Energy Assistance Program received more than $106 million in federal funding to help income-eligible Minnesotans pay their heating bills this winter. Minnesotans should submit an application to the local service provider in their area. To find your local service provider, call 800-657-3710 or visit the Commerce Department’s Energy Assistance Program webpage.

Efforts are also being made to help the homeless get shelter this winter. Millions are going towards expanding available hotel rooms and shelters statewide, as well as providing additional funding for providing food and hygiene and sanitation supplies.
