Tax Day is here, only a month later than usual.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) extended the filing deadline for the 2020 tax year from April 15 to May 17, 2021.

The delay applies to individual taxpayers, including those who pay self-employment tax.

If you are expecting a refund this year, the IRS urges taxpayers to file as quickly as possible, as most tax refunds are issued within 21 days. Tax professionals say filing electronically with direct deposit is the fastest way to get refunds.

Individual taxpayers who need more time to file past May 17 can request an extension. Form 4868 will need to be filled out through a tax professional, tax software, or by using the Free File link on

Other forms and filing information can be found here.
