The Duluth Fire Department rescued a person from a vehicle that went into the Superior Bay early Saturday morning.

Firefighters received the report of a vehicle in the water in the 400 block of Helberg Drive, near Comfort Systems, at 2:18 a.m.  The vehicle was mostly submerged when firefighters arrived.

According to friends on Facebook, the man is 25-year-old Matthew Amerson.

Amerson was rescued from the vehicle seven minutes after the call was received.  He was taken to Essentia Health St. Mary’s Hospital  for treatment. Officials there say Amerson is listed in critical condition in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.

No other occupants were found in the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved.

The fire department, with the help of the Duluth Police Department, was able to remove the vehicle form the water at about 3:45.  The U.S. Coast Guard also responded to the scene.
