Friends and family of nearly 100 northland soldiers waved goodbye to their loved ones Wednesday afternoon.
The Superior-based unit has been training in the area for the past several months; however, before they left for their final training in Fort Bliss, Texas, they had a sendoff ceremony at the Superior Middle School.
The 950th Engineer Company will deploy to eastern Afghanistan in early winter. They will clear roads and supply routes of improvised explosive devices. The captain of these troops, Andrew Redd, said these soldiers are well prepared.
"Out of the army, we're probably the best handled to discover the devices," said Redd. "That's our jobs. We have the equipment for it."
The upcoming deployment will be the unit's first service in Afghanistan.
It deployed previously to Iraq in 2003 and 2010.
