2018 is a bargaining year for the USW and the major steel and mining companies.

According to a Monday update from the steelworkers, ArcelorMittal is seeking major economic and non-economic concessions. The 2018 contract negotiations for that company began with a face-to-face meeting with management, during which the company provided an overview of its business over the past ten years. Then they presented an initial proposal.

The bargaining update said that there are concessions being proposed for health care for actives, like having employees choose between paying premiums to stay in a PPO plan ($200 per month for a family) or enrolling in a Consumer Driven Health Care plan with $8,000 a year in out of pocket costs.

There are also proposed changes to retiree health care, like having contributions double for retirees.

The update said that the company is proposing changes to sick and accident, severance, and supplemental unemployment, as well as other reductions in things like incentive pay, vacation pay, family and medical leave, seniority, and scheduling.

Also, the USW said the proposal fails to include any wage or pension increases, or specific commitments to invest in the future of the facilities.

"Clearly, our committee has much work to do when bargaining resumes in Pittsburgh on Monday, July 16th, and as always, we will keep everyone informed as the process continues."

ArcelorMittal runs Minorca Mine in Virginia. 

ArcelorMittal, U.S. Steel, and Cleveland-Cliffs all have contracts that expire this year.

U.S. Steel had their face-to-face with the USW on Tuesday, and bargaining begins on the 23rd. In a short statement sent via text, the USW said they met with U.S. Steel for negotiations sound off. "We told USS we expect a fair agreement that rewards our sacrifice."
