On November 9th, 22 years ago, Mitch Robertson founded his business, Tritec. "It's been quite the ride," he shared from his office in Virginia. He grew this idea into the largest steel fabricator north of Duluth, and services many of the mines in the area.
But he had come to the conclusion that further growth on their own was going to be difficult. Then, a partnership with RMS, a long-standing company, became a possibility.
Now that possibility has become a reality. As of Tuesday, October 31st, Tritec is part of the RMS family, and is now known as RMS Tritec. Robertson will stay on as general manager.
"I've been choked up a few times. But on the second breath, I'm excited about the opportunities for employees to grow," Robertson said. There are 42 people who work at the facility, and they have been welcomed into the RMS family.
RMS was founded 91 years ago by the Sill family, and is still operated by them. They have 8 branch offices and 400 employees. Jon Anderson, Vice President of Northern Operations, said, "We have been on the Iron Range a long time, and the joining of the two companies solidifies our base for a lot longer."
Anderson said they sell and service equipment for the mining, construction, and logging industries. Tritec does more of the steel fabricating, liner installation, and repair work on some of the mining equipment. So they've got the same customers and have worked together for decades.
"The transition could not have gone better," Robertson added. Anderson said, "We trust eachother, and understand eachother."
Now that the merger is complete, things are moving quickly. Tritec is moving some of its work into a nearby building, to make room for more floor space.
Robertson wants to more than double the workforce in the coming years.
"We have been good community partners, both RMS and Tritec. And we will continue to be good for the community, and employ more people."
