According to a press release from the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, the groups submitted a petition to the Minnesota DNR on Wednesday. The petition asks for specific changes to the draft permit to mine, or a hearing if these changes are not ordered by the DNR.

A contested case hearing, according to the release, is a hearing run by an administrative law judge to evaluate disputes about material issues of fact in a permit decision.

Specific examples of what the groups are concerned about include dam safety and financial assurance.

PolyMet plans on building the state's first copper-nickel mine in Babbitt, and then processing the minerals in Hoyt Lakes. The project has both strong support and strong opposition.
