MnDOT announced the official opening of the roadway will be on Friday, September 15th in the evening.

There's also a dedication ceremony planned for that morning. State, federal, and local leaders will be attending.

Crews have been working for years to move the major thoroughfare, so that United Taconite can mine under the current highway 53 near Virginia.

Kiewit Construction has been the lead contractor.

The wet summer proved to be a challenge, but MnDOT leaders said they are still about month ahead of schedule.

The deadline to move the road is November. MnDOT will need to remove the old road before then.
