Iron Ore Shipments 7 Pct. Ahead of Last July

The Lake Carriers' Association says shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes were seven percent higher this July than one year earlier.

July shipments totaled 6.46 million tons.  Two Harbors accounted for 30 percent of shipments at seven ports, with more than 1.9 million tons shipped in July.  Superior was the only other port to ship more than a million tons, followed by Silver Bay, Duluth, Cleveland, and Ashtabula, Ohio.

The news is mixed on a year-to-date basis.  Shipments so far this year are 3.2 percent lower than they were last year ar this time, but 5.6 percent above the five-year average.
