In the report, the world's largest steelmaker outlines their 10 sustainable development outcomes. "We know we have impacts that are both really positive in developing modern lifestyles, as well as impacts and environmental challenges that we need to work on and continue to operate as best company we can," Beth Spurgeon added. She's the Head of Corporate Responsibility for ArcelorMittal Americas.

It's also about being transparent with their shareholders, she added.

Some of the outcomes include safe, healthy quality working lives for their people, and they did see a 31% improvement over the lost time injury rate from 2017.

Another is the efficient use of resources, like implementing 30 energy projects. "Not only do they make good business sense, because it saved the company $15 million dollars, it also relates to the equivalent of powering 11,000 U.S. homes," Spurgeon explained.

Local investments are critical to their work. At Minorca Mine in Virginia, they've partnered with organizations like the Range Engineering Council, United Way, Mesabi Range College Foundation, and Iron Range Partnership for Sustainability. "We're proud to give back and proud when our employees do, too," Spurgeon said.

ArcelorMittal will soon take over management of Hibbing Taconite, where they are also a partial owner.
