Essentia Health says it and a union have reached a tentative agreement to avert a potential strike later this week at its Deer River hospital and nursing home.

The Service Employee International Union Healthcare Minnesota strike by 96 workers was scheduled to take place on Thursday, Jan. 2 and Friday, Jan. 3.  Essentia says it reached a tentative agreement with the union on Monday evening.

"Both parties worked hard to make progress in negotiations to reach a mutually beneficial agreement that supports our mission of being called to make a healthy difference in people’s lives, keeps Essentia jobs among the best in the communities we are privileged to serve and supports excellence in patient care," Essentia said in a prepared statement.

Details of the tentative agreement have not been released.  The deal is subject to a vote by union members.

The union had cited pay and benefits as the sticking points in the negotiations.
