With a $15 million project St. Luke's broke ground on Tuesday, the two will be soon be connected.

Construction work begins Monday on the two-story, 38,000-square foot building.

"We're going to have one main entry point into Lake View, and we'll have a person greeting patients as they arrive. We'll have central registration, we'll have very easy wayfinding for primary care, specialty care, rehab and community space," President and CEO Greg Ruberg said.

Ruberg hopes the project will define the future of healthcare in rural communities and even become a national model.

"We've had more and more feedback from our patients in the surrounding communities, Two Harbors included, that want more service done here," he said.

So the expansion will include a new specialty care outreach space, a bigger lab and a larger pharmacy so that they can do infusion therapy in Two Harbors, eliminating a drive to Duluth for those patients.

St. Luke's is also planning a community gathering space for things like health education, meetings and yoga classes.

The building is expected to be complete in July of 2020.
