Nurses hold informational picket in Virginia

Updated: August 03, 2020 05:50 PM

A sea of red t-shirts moved along the sidewalk outside of the Essentia Health-Virginia hospital on Monday. Nurses holding signs walked an informational picket line, calling for a fair contract. People honked as they drove by.

They were joined by other unions like AFSCME and family members.

About 100 nurses are part of the bargaining unit at Essentia Health-Virginia. "We want to settle this contract. And move forward and focus on safe patient care," shared Jodi Hensley, who works in the emergency room.

Joni Pfutzenreuter added, "Our contract expired on August 1, 2019, and negotiations with Essentia have been unsuccessful. We are in a pandemic and have to take care of our community." She works in surgery.

Essentia sent a statement last week, saying they will continue negotiating in good faith and look forward to a mutually beneficial agreement.
