ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Minn. -- The need for blood doesn't take time off for the holidays.

The American Red Cross is holidaing special blood drives between Thanksgiving and Christmas throughout St. Louis County to help fill the need.  During that period, the Red Cross says more than a million units of blood could be used nationwide.

However, the charity says despite the need, busy holiday schedules make it difficult for people to donate.

Donors of all blood types are needed.  But there is a special need for donors with type O blood.

The Red Cross will also give blood donors through Dec. 18 a $5 gift card to thank them for donating.

You can make an appointment to donate blood by going to the Red Cross website or calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.

Local blood drives will be held:

  • Dec. 2, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Range Regional Airport, 11038 MN-37, Hibbing
  • Dec. 3, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Mesabi Family YMCA, 8367 Unity Drive, Virginia
  • Dec. 6, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 4430 McCulloch Street, Duluth
