The new space, which includes the Center for Personal Fitness and the Therapy and Performance Center, replaces a smaller downtown facility.  Essentia officials say they've known that they needed more room for a long time.

"Our locker rooms are roughly 50% bigger, our therapy pool is roughly 50% bigger.  We've added additional physical therapy space and some very focused physical therapy equipment and facilities to better serve our population," said Kurt Radke, the operations administrator for Essential Musculoskeletal Services.

Radke said the combination of a fitness center and physical therapy center in one location creates a synergy with people beginning to go there for physical therapy and later joining the fitness center.  Regular memberships for the fitness center are $45 per month for a single person, with other rates for couples, dependents, and seniors.

Brian Lehr, a physical therapist and manager of the outpatient musculoskeletal clinic, called the new space a drastic change from current facility, mainly because of the larger size.

"We've been unable to offer some of the services that we've wanted to in the past, so this finally gives that opportunity.  We're really looking at advancing our sports performance enhancement services, bariatric and lymphedema services," Lehr said.

The new facility took 15 months to plan and research.
