Instead of a vacant lot with weeds, this spot across from the Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center is thriving.

Growing here is Swiss chard, tomatoes, beets, and kale, among other things.

UDAC, the Duluth Community Garden, and Essentia Health have teamed up to make this happen. Each Wednesday, the UDAC crew comes and waters and weeds.

At the end of the growing season, the produce will head to the food shelf at CHUM. The hope is to make this even bigger next year.

"This has been a great experience. It helps us give back to the community. And it's a real joy working with UDAC participants, seeing the joy it brings them," shared Mia Lundquist, Nutrition Services Supervisor for Essentia.

Now in its second year, the successful partnership has earned a statewide honor called The Life Enrichment Award from the Minnesota Organization for Habilitation and Rehabilitation.
