Essentia Health and Virginia Market Square Farmers Market remind you to use your head and wear a bike helmet.  To help promote this message, the two organizations hosted a bike safety event Thursday, at the Virginia Market Square.

Nearly 200 bike helmets were given away. "Kids were lined up before 1pm," shared Marlise Riffel, director of the Market Square.

"Bike helmets keep you safe. They are the single most effective safety device available to reduce head injury and death from bicycle crashes," says Jenna Ballinger, an Essentia community health specialist.

Ballinger adds more children ages 5-14 are seen in emergency rooms for injuries related to biking than any other sport. But wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of severe brain injuries by 88-percent.  "Despite the fact that bike helmets are proven to be very effective, only 45-percent of children 14 and under usually wear a bike helmet," Ballinger adds.

There's also a helmet giveaway at the Grand Rapids Farmer's Market on Saturday, from 8am-1pm.
