"We are having a community-wide celebration. We have been celebrating since last July. It will be on Tuesday from 5 to 7 on our campus. We're going to have a barbeque, a sidewalk chalk exhibit, art exhibits, a scavenger hunt, games for the kids so it should be a good time," said Jordan Milan, Director of Strategic Communications with the University.

In 1893, the Wisconsin Legislature established the Superior Normal School, the University of Wisconsin-Superior's predecessor, to train teachers. Milan says since then they have come a long way.

"Our graduating class back in 1897 was just half a dozen students, but since then we have about 2,600 students. We offer graduate programs as well as more than 50 undergraduate programs, and in addition teacher education," said Milan.

Milan says she has high hopes for the future.

"We're always looking at new programs, and new opportunities to engage witht he community. There are lots of opportunities going on right now," she said.

The community celebration takes place on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. on campus. and following that is the Big Top Chautauqua Concert until 8:30 p.m.
