The University of Minnesota-Duluth Theatre season is set to kick-off on Thursday, October 3rd.  They're taking on the Tony award-winning musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

"It's a spelling bee, so the audience gets to see right into what a spelling bee might look like in Putnam County and it's just really a story about the individuals in the spelling bee and how the experience affects them," Maddie Schafer, who plays Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre, said.

Bret Burggraff, who plays Leaf Coneybear, said his character is home-schooled who isn't necessarily the brightest, but has a big heart and imagination.

Schafer's character is the youngest competitor in the spelling bee and she's pushed by her fathers to succeed.

"My character has such a big imagination, I just get to fly around on stage and just really let it all out there and be a kid again," Burggraff said.  "It's so fun to be a kid again and just play."

Schafer said they even met with some kids the age of their characters to remember what it's like to be a kid.

The performances start October 3rd and run through October 5th and again on October 9th through 12th.  There is a family-friendly show with ASL interpretation on October 6th.  For tickets, click here
