The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says personnel were dispatched to the emergency around 8:49 p.m. Squads arrived near Sampo Beach to find bystanders had removed a male from the water. Authorities said CPR and life-saving measures were initiated immediately.

It was reported that three juvenile boys were swimming out to a diving dock about 75 yards from shore. The sheriff's office says at some point during that time, the 14-year-old went under water and never emerged. The other boys began yelling for help and bystanders from the beach and from boats dove in the water to look him. The teen, from Superior, was reportedly at the bottom of the lake in about 12 to 15 feet of water.

Authorities say swimmer inexperience is believed to be the cause of the incident.

Personnel from Grand Lake Fire Department, Mayo Clinic Ambulance, Solway Fire Department and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad assisted in rescue efforts.
