Life coach Pam Solberg-Tapper said a way to combat that is by responding instead of reacting.

She said it's common knowledge, but not always common practic.  There are three things you can do to help yourself respond instead of react.

1. Pause

  • Take a breath and have restraint.
  • It deescalates that high tension feeling and chills you out.
  • Take a bigger pause and remove yourself from the situation if you need to.

2. Plan a response in advance

  • Have something in your back pocket to be able to say.
  • Helps to be proactive in situations when you might have a disagreement.
  • Re-directs the situation.

3. Set a personal standard.

  • Decide how you want to show up.
  • Have a code of conduct.
  • Guides your response instead of reaction.
