Northwood High School Student Raising Money for Music Department

Margaret Howard is an incoming Senior at Northwood High School in Minong. One of her graduation requirements is completing a "Senior Exit Project."

"Often, it happens to be a foot race or dinner...that raises money for an organization that relates to it," she says.

Her love for music led her to create a fun music competition that will raise money for the school's music department.

"I found, often times at my school, that music was overlooked or not seen quite as important," Howard explains.

The "Up North Battle Of The Bands" will feature at least seven local acts performing at Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center on Friday, August 9. Each band will have a 15-minute set. A judging panel will listen and decide a winner at the end of the night. There is a $200 prize up for grabs.

Howard says preparations for the event have been stressful, but says she's had help from her family and others.

She hopes the proceeds will help with renovations to the band room at the school and to get new music that younger students are interested in.

The first band goes on at 5 p.m. It's free to attend, but donations are accepted. Click here to learn more.
